Pirelli wants to analyse free tyre choice

Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery has told F1i Pirelli will need to analyse how it can give teams free tyre choice following the Strategy Group's proposal.

Following Thursday's meeting of the Strategy Group in Biggin Hill, the FIA released a statement outlining a number of changes planned for the coming years to "improve the show". One such change was free tyre choice for teams, allowing them to pick any two of Pirelli's four compounds - supersoft, soft, medium and hard - for each race weekend.

However, speaking exclusively to F1i, Hembery says Pirelli will need to look in to how it will implement the change.

"Yes it's been noted, we would like to look in to what the problem is that's got to be solved, but as ever Pirelli will work with all the teams to find a satisfactory and safe solution," Hembery said.

Another proposal for 2017 includes wider tyres to help increase performance, and Hembery says Pirelli has long been in favour of such a change.

"We're very happy with that, we suggested we should go back to the wider tyres, they look more aggressive and more dramatic. That's something that we would be very willing to support, and that was discussed with us."
