Kevin Magnussen has been handed a five-second time penalty for an overtaking move on Daniil Kvyat late in the United States Grand Prix.

Having made a late pit stop for supersoft tyres, Magnussen closed in and passed team-mate Jolyon Palmer before attacking Kvyat at Turn 12. With Magnussen leaving the track during the manoeuvre, the stewards imposed a post-race time penalty on the Dane.

"Car 20 left the track in turn 12, gaining a lasting advantage," the stewards decision read.

The five-second penalty drops Magnussen back behind Kvyat in the race classification, with Kvyat promoted to 11th place and the Renault now 12th. Kvyat himself had received a ten-second time penalty for causing a collision with Sergio Perez on the opening lap of the race.

Magnussen also received two penalty points for the incident, which leaves him with four for the current 12-month period.
