Daniil Kvyat described the mileage he got during Wednesday's testing in Barcelona as "crucial" after his return to Toro Rosso.
Red Bull opted to swap Kvyat with Max Verstappen following the Russian Grand Prix, with Verstappen duly going on to win the race in Spain on Sunday. Kvyat himself said he would require a day of testing to full acclimatise to the car and explained the importance of his 116 laps on Wednesday.
"It was quite crucial," Kvyat said. "Obviously the more laps I can get in this new car the more laps I can get familiar with it. Obviously I got more familiarisation, I did some things to suit my driving style a bit better, so I think it was a good combination all together. Very important."
Kvyat stopped late in the day at Turn 6 with a reported power unit issue, but the Russian played down the significance of the problem.
"I don’t know, the team is still trying to work out exactly what happened. Something inside on the back part, we don’t know exactly what happened. We’ll know tomorrow.
"No, I think it was precaution. We just lost a bit of power so we said its better to stop and investigated rather than trying to push it, so we decided it was best to do it that way."
