The third Sochi event gets underway at 15:00 local time at the former Winter Olympic Games venue, with championship leader Nico Rosberg lining up on pole position ahead of Williams’ Valtteri Bottas.

Rosberg’s title rivals have had a challenging weekend so far, as Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel drops five places on the grid for taking a new gearbox. The German will start from P7 after clocking the second fastest time in qualifying.

Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton’s season was dealt another blow on Saturday when the reigning world champion suffered an ERS issue and could not take part in Q3. Tenth on the grid, the Briton has admitted feeling a bit “helpless” after experiencing a second consecutive setback in qualifying.

The second row is occupied by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who has been struggling with the set-up of his car all weekend, and Williams’ Felipe Massa, who is targeting a return to the podium.

The lead Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo is fith, ahead of Force India’ Sergio Perez, who will look to repeat his top-three performance from last year at Sochi Autodrom.

Alongside Vettel is home favourite Daniil Kvyat on the second Red Bull, while Toro Rosso ace Max Verstappen lines up ahead of Hamilton in ninth.
