2017 review: Frustrated Red Bull makes the most of it

Daniel Ricciardo

In his fourth season at Red Bull, it's likely that Daniel Ricciardo can hear the motorsports clock ticking. His team mate - eight years his junior - is proving to be quite the phenomenon. Ricciardo was out-qualified by Max Verstappen on 13 occasions in 2017. It threatens to make the Australian look like yesterday's man.

But Ricciardo certainly won't go easily. He responded to the challenge with a strong start to the season including five consecutive appearances on the podium from Spain to Austria, including victory in Azerbaijan. He picked up four more podiums after the summer break. However, he also started to suffer an increasing number of retirements just as Verstappen conversely found some reliability to finish the year on a charge.

Ultimately Ricciardo suffered six retirements to Verstappen's seven. Three of them came in the last four races alone. A hydraulic failure in the season finale was particularly frustrating, costing Ricciardo fourth place in the driver standings. Even so, he still finished comfortably ahead of Verstappen in the overall points. Now the big question is what he will decide to do when he's a free agent at the end of 2018.
