McLaren juniors come to the fore

McLaren junior Lando Norris triumphed in the action-packed first round of the FIA F1 European Championship at Silverstone yesterday.

The 17-year-old Carlin Motorsport driver lined up on pole and achieved a lights-to-flag  in a race which started behind the safety car due to a downpour of rain just before the start.

When proceedings got underway, several drivers fell victim to the treacherous conditions, initiating several neutralizations but Norris kept his own, each time pulling away from his rivals to win the race from team mate Jake Dennis and Prema's Maximilian Gunther.

Back in Bahrain, Nyck de Vries, another McLaren protégé, showcased his skills by clinching a front-row start alongside poleman Charles Leclerc for Saturday's FIA Formula 2 feature race.

The young Dutch hopeful was initially third fastest in qualifying but Ferrari junior Antonio Fuoco lost his front row start for impeding another driver during qualifying.

The first round of the FIA Formula 2 series will take place this afternoon at Sakhir at 13:10 local time (GMT +3)
