McLAREN GOES FOR “Y” OVER “V”

The MCL33 incorporates a rear suspension with a particularly original design.

On most cars, the suspension's wishbones form a “V”: both arms leave the carbon gearbox casing (to which they are attached) and meet very close to the wheel. This was the case on the MCL32, as seen in the middle image above. The single part of the complete suspension is quite short (compare the white arrows).

On the 2018 car, both legs meet much earlier to extend into a single element, well before reaching the wheel. The structure is more like the shape of a “Y”.

The gain is primarily aerodynamic: on the outside of the bodywork, it is just a single leg – and not a double – which protrudes into the airflow (see the image below).
