UNLEASHING MORE POWER

We have already had the opportunity to stress the vital role that the engine will continue to play in 2017 amid radical aero changes, with more power needed to propel cars that are heavier, generate 20 percent more downforce, and are fitted with wider tyres (which create more drag).

Cowell has confirmed that the latest specification of the Mercedes power unit – the PU106D – will deliver much more power and represents “a major evolution” compared to last year’s model. The energy recovery systems have been revised to cater for longer periods of open throttle, while overall engine efficiency has been further improved as well.

With four entire powertrains allocated per driver over the whole 20-race season, and more time spent at full speed, Mercedes has focussed on engine reliability, especially after last year’s highly publicised issues (remember Lewis Hamilton’s crushing failure while leading the Malaysian Grand Prix). Back at the factory, validation and vetting processes have been revamped and improved.

While the wastegate tailpipe setup has not changed much compared to last year’s W07 (the two exits remain placed on each side of the exhaust pipe), the rear wing mounting pillar is radically different.

Just like on the 2016-spec McLaren, Ferrari, and Toro Rosso, it is now going directly through the exhaust pipe.
