Amon forged a partnership with French manufacturer Matra in 1971 to handle their strident screaming  powerful V12 cars. Alas, once again, results fell short of expectations.

Following a trend of typical Amon misfortune, the Kiwi was on his way to ward off bad luck and finally score his first Grand Prix victory at Monza when his... visor came off his helmet while leading the race with ten laps to go!

A year later, on the daunting Charade circuit at  Clermont-Ferrand in France, he was comfortably leading with the Matra when a puncture thwarted his efforts, forcing him to pit for a tyre change.

He rejoined the race and pulled out all the stops to set a new lap record and finish an astonishing third behind Jackie Stewart's Tyrrell and Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus.
