A reminder: the main changes to the technical regs for 2018

5 - THREE ENGINES, NO MORE!

This season, an additional step will be taken in terms of the reliability of V6 hybrids: F1 powertrains will have to be even more durable in order to avoid the application of penalties. The quota of engines, turbochargers and MGU-H allowed for the entire season will decrease from four to three, while only two MGU-Ks, 2 energy stores (ES), 2 control electronic boxes (CE) can now be mounted.

With one more round in the championship than last year, each engine, turbocharger and MGU-H will have to last for 7 races (compared to 5 in 2017), while each MGU-K, energy store and control electronic boxes will be used for 10 to 11 rounds, which is twice as much as in 2017.

These longevity thresholds will be more or less difficult to achieve by the four engine manufacturers, who demonstrated very different levels of reliability.
