MARANELLO’S SEGMENTED APPROACH

As shown above, Ferrari also installed new bargeboards with more sophisticated outlines and shapes on the SF70H. These now have two distinct panels, while the lower winglets have been re-designed.

Each passing race brings further confirmation that Ferrari – and other F1 teams – are developing more and more complex and segmented aero elements. It was Mercedes that pioneered the philosophy back in 2014 but now cuts and saw-tooth details are all the rage up and down the paddock, always in a bid to keep a tight control on airflows. With the increasing number of vanes, flaps, and cuts, F1 aerodynamicists can direct the airflow more precisely towards the lower sidepods. More dents also reduce the risk of airflow separation, which can happen on the bent part of the bargeboard for instance.
