SEGMENTED APPROACH

Mercedes’ aero philosophy of segmentation continues to find new followers, as highlighted by Sauber’s revised turning vanes. The under-nose elements are now clearly divided into two parts whereas these used to share the same base.

Moving to the rear of the C36, one will notice the five tiny vanes added to the ends of the diffuser (compare yellow arrows), in the spirit of what can be seen at the back of the Ferrari SF70H. These vanes are here to push the airflow on the side and create small vortices in order to amplify flow expansion from the diffuser and thus generate more downforce. One shall note that Williams (bottom picture) also placed a new vane in the same area, though its design remained fairly conventional.

Finally, Sauber made another cut in the C36’s floor, while a half-cylinder-shaped element was added ahead of the tyre, just like on the McLaren MCL32.
