His qualifying lap neared perfection, even Vettel was said to be surprised to see him so close after the Mercs were clearly not on pace. He fell short of the pole for just .045s, and row one by .002s. On Sunday, Valtteri soon understood he could do no better than third place, by controlling Verstappen. He lost out in the pits, against the other Red Bull, then in coming out behind Sainz.
