From F1 to Indy: a crossover of diverse fortunes

Giuseppe Farina

The first-ever world champion’s name appears four times on the entry list. In 1950 (with an uncompetitive factory Maserati), in 1952 in a Ferrari that was destroyed at a test in Torino, 1956 and 1957. Back in the day, Indy was a point-scoring round of the F1 championship. He never managed to qualify for the 33-car field. In 1956, his Kurtis Kraft was fitted with a six cylinder Ferrari. Heavy rain left little time to practice and the Italian failed. The following year he had a more traditional Offenhauser engine. Faced with handling issues, he handed over to team mate Keith Andrews in practice who was killed. The entry was withdrawn.
