From F1 to Indy: a crossover of diverse fortunes

Denny Hulme

Four participations at the speedway for the driver known as the ‘Bear’. The first in 1967 was productive with fourth place in an Eagle-Ford and ‘Rookie of the Year’ honours. He did it again the following year, despite again starting down the grid. In 69, when Mario Andretti took his only swig of the winner’s milk, Hulme’s clutch gave out. With McLaren in 71 following Bruce’s death, he qualified a strong 4th, but the Offenhauser engine broke 63 laps from the end.
