Welshman Tom Pryce was tragically killed on this day in 1977, the victim of a freak set of circumstances which marred the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami that year. Pryce's Shadow struck a marshal crossing the track to attend to team mate Renzo Zorzi's stranded car. A fire extinguisher carried by the marshal smashed into Pryce's head, killing the Welshman instantly. Pryce was 27 and on the verge of a promising career. In 1975, he won the non-championship Race of Champions at Brands Hatch.
